Annotated Bibliography

van der Colff, Marilette. "Aliens And Existential Elevators: Absurdity And Its Shadows In Douglas Adams's Hitch Hiker Series." Literator 29.3 (2008): 123-138. Humanities Source. Web.

As my webpage will be focusing on the creation of the earth and the questioning of God within the series, I think it’s important to look at all aspects of the work. Considering that the majority of it is set in outer space with aliens, it’s obvious that many people would have a problem and it would conflict with religious beliefs. van der Colff studies the extra-terrestrial aspects of the work and she does mention how Christians seem targeted with their beliefs.

Kropf, Carl R. "Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker Novels As Mock Science Fiction." Science Fiction Studies 15.(1988): 61-70. Humanities Source. Web.

Douglas Adams created “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” as a comedic piece of work, and some even say that it isn’t true sci-fi. However, that is an interesting take considering all the aliens, robots, and battles. This article also talks about the central idea about the creation of the universe and how Adams has created a backwards world where it doesn’t follow the rules of traditional science fiction.

Mousley, Andy. "Introduction: Shakespeare And The Meaning Of Life." Shakespeare (1745-0918) 5.2 (2009): 135-144. Humanities Source. Web.

I found this article to be a very interesting read, comparing the way that Adams create life and a world to that of the classics of Shakespeare. Mousley focuses on the pop culture and how humans are perceived. How inexplicitly they depict the ways of the world in literature.

Friend, Michele. “God… Promptly Vanishes in a Puff of Logic”. Philosophy & The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Ed. Nicholas Joll. New York: Palgrave Macmillan. 2012. Print.

The article talks about how God is questioned in the series, through the reader and the actual characters. Friend analyzes and criticizes how Adams has placed God into his work, and then seemly got rid of him once he was questioned. She breaks up the system through a series of seven steps and works through each one at a time.

Connor, Kimberly Rae. "The Speed Of Belief: Religion And Science Fiction, An Introduction To The Implicit Religions Of Science Fiction." Implicit Religion 17.4 (2014): 367-377. ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials. Web

I picked an article that wasn’t about “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and about religion and science fiction because I think it’s important to understand how these seemingly very different topic intertwined and the history between to two fields of study.

Erkenbrecher, Christian. "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" Revisited : Motifs of Science Fiction and Social Criticism. Hamburg, DEU: Diplomica Verlag, 2011. ProQuest ebrary. Web.

Choosing this book for one of my sources allows me to explore deeper into not only the religion side of things, but the other worldly criticisms that many people have expressed over the years.  I will largely be focusing on Section 3.9 of this work, it speaks about the religion concerns that people have expressed in science fiction.

Hanlon, Michael. “The Science of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. New York: Macmillan. 2005. Print.

This book has several chapters about the various topics I am interested in. There is a whole chapter titled “the existence of god” which was an interesting read hearing Hanlon’s take on Adams’s work. Other chapters like “the babel fish” and “ultimate questions – and answer” will be helpful on this project as well.

“The Anthology at the End of the Universe” Ed. Glenn Yeffeth. Dallas: BenBella Books. 2004. Print.

This collection of works in the book has varies ideas and concepts that I have found interesting in regards to “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. I believe it will be helpful in aiding me in making of my webpage.

I'm Adams, Douglas. “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. London: Pan Books. 2009. Print. Doing my project on “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”

I figure I better site the actual novel on which it is based. This is will be helpful for quotes and direct references on the website.

"Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Religion and Science Fiction. 27 Jan. 2010. Web. <http://religionandsciencefiction.blogspot.ca/2010/01/hitchhikers-guide-to-galaxy.html>

A blog post I found about the series and the religion within it. The author is interesting to read and has knowledge. I think this post will be helpful in leading me to other sources if need be, and not as a primary source of knowledge for my own project.

Breimeier, Russ. "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." ChristianityToday.com. 29 Apr. 2005. Web. 6 Oct. 2015. <http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2005/aprilweb-only/hitchhikersguide.html>.

A movie review done by a Christian website of the 2005 movie. Breimeir is light hearted when talking about the film and warns Christians that they might not like themes of “Big Bang, evolution, and the question of whether or not God exists” and the parody of the church part way through. Having an inside look at the mind of a Christian is an interesting view to share while discussing this topic.

van der Colff, Marilette. One is Never Alone with a Rubber Duck : Douglas Adams’s Absurd Fictional Universe. Newcastle upon Tyne, GBR: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2010. ProQuest ebrary. Web.

An interesting book I found written by the same person who wrote “Aliens And Existential Elevators: Absurdity And Its Shadows In Douglas Adams's Hitch Hiker Series”. She analyzes the work on a more philosophical level, she enjoys the lightheartedness of his works and explores a different aspect than most.

Simpson, M.J. “Hitchhiker A Biography of Douglas Adams”. Stirlingshire: Hodder & Stoughton. 2003. Print. This book will be helpful in understanding the author’s background and personal beliefs. Something that will come in handy when discussing why and how he wrote the books. This particular biography has several chapter on Adams personal religious beliefs and it has the views of people close to him.

“42 (Number)” retrieved from Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42_(number)#ReligionThe article on the number 42 is important because it is the answer to the universe. There is references to “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and references to other religious views. I am hoping that this will be useful when taking about the religious aspects and how they connect with the series. It will be a good place to get more resources.

“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” retrieved from Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy

An overview article about the series of works. Having a collective page of information is helpful in finding other sources or information to help lead me in the right direction.

"Science Fiction and Religion - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Comparative Geeks. 26 July 2013. Web. 6 Oct. 2015. <https://comparativegeeks.wordpress.com/2013/07/25/science-fiction-and-religion-the-hitchhikers-guide-to-the-galaxy/>.

A different view on the two fields of science fiction and religion, only this time how it explicitly relates to “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.

Nicki Brøchner. “The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy on god”. Online video clip. Youtube: Youtube. 17 Oct 2007.A short clip portraying the interaction between man and God just before when he seemingly “puffs away in logic”.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Dir. Garth Jennings. Perf. Martin Freeman, Yasiin Bey, Alan Rickman. 2005. Film.

This is the film which I will be referring to throughout my website. A good reference, although differing from the book it is still important to analyze. r own text and edit me. It's easy.
